LAWYERS, teachers, councillors and school principals celebrated their grandma’s birthday on Sunday afternoon by drinking umqombothi and slaughtering a cow.
The three day “thank you grandma” ceremony took place in KwaNobuhle kasi, Uitenhage.
Nondabangaye Daku died in 1988 at the age of 75. She had 16 grandchildren, 59 great grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren.
One of her granddaughters, Xoliswa Daku (42), said they always thanked gogo Nondabangaye by cleaning her grave and putting flowers on it.
Xoliswa, a lawyer by profession who is also a sangoma, said: “We were fortunate to be raised by her.
“It’s now 28 years since she departed from this world and today we thank her. Her birthday was on 30 September.
“When we had traditional ceremonies, she used to stand in the kraal and would praise a cow, telling it to enter the yard! She was a great and wonderful leader and her legacy lives on. We appreciate her every year.”
Grandson Melikhaya Daku (40) said the event gathered together the entire Daku family, who came from all corners of Mzansi.
“She is our ancestor and she must bless us with many more blessings.
“Good things are going to happen after this event.”
Nondabanganye had four children and only her last-born, Mantombazana (66,) is left.
She said: “She treated all family members equally and was a strong woman.”
