THE bullet that almost killed Samkelo Jiyane has been removed from his back.
“I’m very happy the bullet was removed from his back,” said mum Phumzile Nkosi (48).
Samkelo was struck in the back by a stray bullet last Saturday while playing soccer.
The bullet was allegedly fired by passing ANC mourners returning from a funeral.
The story appeared on the front page of the People’s Paper on Wednesday.
Phumzile, who is from Daveyton in Ekurhuleni, said: “I’m at peace knowing his pain will go away. My sleepless nights are over.”
She couldn’t believe it when she got a call on Thursday morning from hospital officials about her son’s operation.
“I’m grateful to Daily Sun for helping me. My son’s condition is stable.
“The wound is still very painful, but he’ll be able to go back to school soon.”
Doctors from Charlotte Maxeke Hospital removed the bullet on Friday.
Phumzile said doctors told her the bullet was taken out because it was near his boy’s vital organs.
She was told the wound would take about two weeks to heal and her son might experience side effects and pain.
Gauteng health spokesman Prince Hamnca said: “ The bullet was removed on the same night.
“The boy was discharged and referred to a local clinic for the removal of stitches.”
