A FIRE at Malamulele Crossing shopping complex on Sunday night caused damage worth nearly R10 million!

It damaged 10 shops in the Limpopo shopping centre. According to shopkeepers, a similar incident occurred last year when residents took to the streets demanding their own municipality.

The fire apparently started at one of the shops at about 9pm and quickly spread. At some of the shops everything was burned. Firefighters from Vhembe worked until the morning to put out the flames.

One of the shopkeepers said they were living in fear.

“We lost a lot of stock during last year’s protests and we don’t know why they targeted us. We are taking away our stock until the situation returns to normal because we fear a repeat of last year.

“We don’t know what happened or caused this fire but we have to be careful.”

Colonel Ronel Otto said the cause of the fire was still to be determined.

“Yes, it happened and we are dispatching our team of forensic experts to the complex. We will do tests and investigate the cause of the fire. We cannot rule out the possibility of arson,”
