A WOMAN suspected of dumping her newborn baby girl in a shallow grave last week has been nabbed!
The woman, believed to be the mum of a baby found in KwaDwesi extension, Port Elizabeth on Tuesday was bust at a taxi rank, while trying to flee the kasi.
Residents tipped off the cops after Daily Sun published a story about the baby on Thursday.
A group of boys playing in the bush found the baby partially covered with soil with her umbilical cord still attached.
The children rescued her and she was taken to Dora Nginza Hospital, where she will stay until she’s well enough to go to a place of safety.
Police spokesman Captain Andre Beetge said: “Police visited the families of all those who had children at the hospital last week.
“The 24-year-old woman was found at a taxi rank, allegedly as she was preparing to flee from the area.”
Residents alerted the cops to her whereabouts after police appealed for help to find the baby’s mum.
The officers at KwaDesi Police Station named the baby Sindiswa, which means “saved” in Xhosa.
Beetge took pictures of the baby in hospital, saying: “This is to show the residents of Nelson Mandela Bay that she is well and getting stronger.”
Station commander Lieutenant-Colonel Singaphi Sijako said they were overwhelmed by phone calls from people who wanted to donate clothing and nappies for the little girl.
“We wish to thank our community for opening their hearts to this young survivor. Donations can be dropped off at the police station and will be handed over to social workers.”
The mum will appear in New Brighton Magistrates Court soon on charges of attempted murder and child abandonment.
