THE ANC in KZN has expressed its disappointment over a councillor being convicted of stock theft.

Municipal spokesman Thami Shangase said the council had not been informed of the conviction of Mthokozisi Mthembu.

“I think fellow councillors were ashamed of this. When the mayor visited his ward last month, we were told he was in hospital.”

Mthembu is the councillor for ward 7 in the Mthonjaneni Municipality in Melmoth, northern KZN.

He was found guilty by the Piet Retief Magistrates Court in Mpumalanga last month and was kept in prison until Tuesday for sentencing which was, however, postponed until 14 February.

Mthembu, a former deputy principal of Kwanxusa High School in Melmoth, had been out on bail since his arrest last December.

Mpumalanga provincial police spokesman Brigadier Leonard Hlathi said cops bust the councillor with 11 cows on his trailer.

Tholi Gwala, the ANC’s regional secretary, said the party was disturbed by Mthembu’s arrest as it damaged its standing in society.
