SLAIN popular politician and advocate Jake Maseka (74) was laid to rest at Zandfontein Cemetery, Tshwane on Saturday.

Maseka was shot dead last Wednesday in his office in zone 4, Ga-Rankuwa. He was killed by men who attacked him at about 7am.

Maseka was described as a humble man by those who knew him. His granddaughter, Johanna Sekwele, said when he was killed they were about to put up campaign posters of the Movement Democratic Party (MDP) for the upcoming local election.

“My grandfather registered the MDP with the Independent Electoral Commission and the posters were ready just three days after his killing,” she said.

Maseka’s colleague, Advocate Mokotedi Mpshe, was among the mourners. He said he was encouraged by Maseka to join the legal profession.

“I was a lecturer at Vista University when I met Maseka. I listened to his advice and that made me what I am today.”

Mpshe added Maseka bought him his first gown after he graduated as an advocate.

Maseka’s family and friends are devastated by his death.

His killers are still at large.

According to his secretary, Portia Phahle, two men entered the office and asked to talk to Maseka.

Portia thought they were clients as they had files with them.

“I tried to stop them but they stormed into his office. Later I heard gunshots and hid under the table,” she said.

The killers took Maseka’s car keys. Men fled in a silver Polo Vivo and other suspects drove off in Maseka’s Mercedes-Benz.

Maseka was well-known in legal circles and was the chairman of the Bophuthatswana Law Society during the apartheid era. He served as a member of Parliament for the UDM and later the MDP.
