ON FRIDAY, Riverlea High School was raided by the police following complaints from local residents.
Gauteng community safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane said community members complained that the school in Randburg, Joburg was full of drugs.
Metro cops and the SAPS conducted searches at the school. A sniffer dog was used to check pupils’ bags while cops body searched them.
However, the police didn’t find much. Two packs of cigarettes, a lighter and a bullet, which the pupil it was found on said he found it on his way to school, were confiscated.
The MEC said the boy found with the bullet would receive counselling.
“We have not found any drugs but the kids have informed us that those responsible for drug dealing in the area jumped the fence. However, we will find them,” she said.
Nkosi-Malobane promised that the cops would continue visiting the school over the next three months.
“The intention here is to make sure we get drugs out of the school,” she said.
Deputy principal Bertram Arendse said he was informed by the police a week ago that the raid would happen on Friday.
“There were a lot of complaints from the school and the community. We have a problem with certain pupils being involved in drug abuse,” he said.
