A number of people were injured after the taxi they were travelling in drove into a sugar cane, 250 meters downhill.
Paramedics arrived at the scene in Inanda after receiving a call from a member of the public, reporting the accident.
When they arrived, it was established that while travelling in the direction of Verulam the brakes on the Toyota Hiace taxi failed.
The vehicle then veered off the road and continued downhill through the sugar cane before it crashed in a ditch in an open field.
Several occupants of the taxi were thrown out the mini-bus taxi after the sliding door opened while it cut a path through the cane.
Roughly 16 passengers suffered mild to moderate injuries. They were treated on scene before being transported to the Osindisweni Hospital by various ambulance services.
