TODAY a pillar of the Motswako movement will be celebrated.

A memorial service in honour of DJ Zondi will be held at the Mmabana Theatre in Mahikeng, North West, starting at 2pm today.

The sudden death of the producer and DJ, real name Zondi Chakane, left many reeling in shock.

DJ Zondi died last Thursday from a stroke due to high blood pressure problems.

Jabulani “HHP” Tsambo told Daily Sun he was saddened by the passing of “such a humble legend”.

“Things won’t be the same without him because he always kept peace among people. He was my DJ for years and I think I speak for many when I say we have lost the general of the Motswako movement because he loved it with all his heart.”

HHP said he was still in denial because he was with DJ Zondi at the hospital and things looked promising.

He said: “It’s hard for me to accept that he is gone because things looked good when we were at the hospital after he suffered a stroke on 24 November.”

According to the rapper, Zondi played an important role in his career and many other Motswako rappers.

“He played an instrumental role in keeping us together. He was like one of my brothers – even my family is affected by his passing.”

The funeral will be held at his home in Bloemfontein this Saturday.
