A FORMER model has had to have both of her legs amputated because of an infection caused by a tampon.
According to New Zealand Herald, Lauren Wasser (29) from California, America had no idea what fate had in store for her when she started feeling unwell at a party in 2012.
Back at her apartment, Lauren fell unconscious. The next morning, cops discovered her face down on the floor. She was feverish, her kidneys were failing and she’d had a heart attack.
In hospital, a specialist immediately asked if she was using a tampon. She was, and it was sent away for testing. It turned out to be teaming with poisonous bacteria, causing a condition called toxic shock syndrome.
The toxic condition progressed so rapidly that her leg began to rot, and to save her life it had to be cut off.
Last Sunday, Lauren posted a photo of herself in hospital, having just had her remaining leg cut off.
Writing for InStyle magazine before her surgery, the brave young woman said: "In a few months, I'm inevitably going to have my other leg amputated. There's nothing I can do about it.
"I grew up playing basketball, but I haven't been able to run in five years. I'm in daily excruciating pain.
"I have a golden leg that I am completely proud of, but my left foot has an open ulcer, no heel, and no toes.”
Lauren enjoys a lot of support and admiration from the public and will hopefully soon be on the road to recovery.
