MUSICIANS will play and sing their hearts out to help needy students.
Music lovers will be able to enjoy soulful jazz next Friday at the 29th Jazz Jol fundraising event organised for University of KZN students.
The annual event will take place at the university’s Centre for Jazz and Popular Music.
The Sweet Concept, whose members all studied at the university, will share the stage with other talented musicians.
The band’s pianist, Siya Mthethwa (31), said as former students they feel privileged to be part of the fundraising event.
“It gives us a chance to give back to the students who are still pushing to achieve their musical dreams.
“Most of the members of our band were helped by money that was raised by others, so the initiative really touches our hearts.
“We play a unique brand of jazz – we go beyond traditional jazz. We even bring in some elements of hip hop.”
Neil Gonsalves, a music lecturer at the university, said: “We’re raising funds to support the Ronnie Madonsela scholarship, which gives bursaries to deserving students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
“The bursaries help them to obtain visas for overseas trips as well as accommodation if they attend national and local workshops and conferences.”
The Sweet Concept will share the stage with UKZN Voices and the UKNZ Big Band.
Tickets at the door cost R120, pensioners pay R80 and students R60.
