LEGENDARY Soul Brothers leader, David Masondo, may have died a year ago but to his family, the wounds are still fresh.
Masondo died at the age of 67 in July last year after being hospitalised for almost two months at Garden City Hospital in Joburg.
His son, Sphamandla Masondo (35), told Daily Sun that the pain of losing his father was unbearable.
On Saturday the family held a ceremony in Hammarsdale, eThekwini, to unveil his tombstone.
The ceremony was organised by Sphamandla and some of the family members.
It was only attended by close friends and family and no popular artists were there.
A cow was slaughtered in honour of the late musician.
Sphamandla, who is also a member of Soul Brothers, said he had lost his pillar of strength.
“My father died while I still needed him. He was my pillar of strength. We used to share everything and I learned a lot from him. He taught me a lot about life and music,” he said.
He said he sometimes cried about his father’s death, especially when he listened to older Soul Brothers albums. He said his father had many children and some of them couldn’t attend the ceremony.
“I won’t say how many children my father had but we are quite a lot. Some of his children live in other provinces like Gauteng and Limpopo and they are committed to their jobs and families. That is why they couldn’t attend the ceremony,” he said.
Masondo wasn’t the first member of the group to die. Tuza Mthethwa died in 1979 and Zakes Mchunu in 1984.
