SIX maskandi stars have teamed up with King Goodwill Zwelithini’s praise singer to record a song that celebrates the Zulu people’s 200 years of existence.
Thokozani Langa, Osaziwayo, Khuzani Mpungose, Dlubheke, Zanefa Ngidi and Mfezemnyama, together with the king’s praise singer Goqozile Masango, have recorded a single called Amantshontsho kaMaskandi.
The single, which was released last month, uses the lyrics from the hymns sung by King Cetshwayo during the Battle of Isandwana in 1879.
The artists will perform the song at the Amantshontsho Maskandi Awards, which will be held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban on 20 February.
The founder of the awards Mlamuli Nxele said he asked the artists to produce a song that will give the Zulu people a sense of pride in their 200-year existence.
The Zulu royal family is also busy preparing a celebration to honour King Shaka, who founded the Zulu nation.
“We sent invitations to the royal family and we are expecting some senior princes and princesses to attend the awards.
“We would be blessed if His Majesty King Zwelithini attends our function,” said Mlamuli.
He added that the awards will also pay a special tribute to both the living and fallen heroes and heroines of maskandi music.
