AT EVERY awards ceremony, someone wears an outfit that grabs attention.

But at the Metro FM Music Awards in Durban on Saturday, Free State singer Skolopad had tongues wagging even more than usual.

The performer, known for her skimpy outfits, shocked everyone with a dress with a slit up to her waist!

However, Skolopad said she was not ashamed of the yellow dress and the buzz it created on social media.

“Instead of talking about the awards, they were talking about me. I’m a fat black woman who feels comfortable under my brown cellulite skin,” said the 33-year-old whose real name is Nonhlanhla Qwabe.

While she was on the red carpet, Skolopad posed for the cameras and exposed a tattoo on her bum.

She told Daily Sun: “The awards were fun and everyone was shocked at my dress. Some people were even trying to discourage me, saying I was fat and had cellulite. I am not ashamed of my weight or my big belly.

“I am comfortable in my own skin and I wish all young women would embrace their bodies. I asked a young local designer to make a dress that would expose my naughty bum and make it look as if I wasn’t wearing panties.

“I was actually wearing a G-String with that dress. I call it the yellow naughty bum expose and I love it very much.”

After seeing the dress on television, many viewers took to social media to talk about it.

Fashion designer and businessman Thabo Maserumule of Thunderstorm Designs said the dress was too revealing.

“I think next time this lady needs to wear a dress that works for her body,” he said.

Some of the comments on Facebook included:

  • Nhlanhla Mahlangu: “Wear what you want. Don’t worry about people who sin differently. You made it and stole the spotlight.”
  • Loraine Lady-Lonyadeni: “Not that we are hating but this is wrong. We can’t compare South Africa and America because it’s not the same. As a woman, you dress in an appropriate way and respect your body.”
  • MJ Willow Mohapi Hadebi: “You are not Beyonce and this is Africa. Don’t pull the stunt of Africans going around naked. What you wore shows you lack self respect. Where did you see Beyonce with an ass that looks like it’s about to fall on the ground?”

Twitter users also had a lot to say about Skolopad’s outfit. Some of the comments included:

  • Asanda Magaqa: “Apparently her name is Skolopad and she has been trying to break into the industry. She sure got noticed tonight.”
  • ThiweOfficialVerified wrote: “Look, what Skolopad did was strategic. Now she needs to take advantage of the hype and promote her music. She’s a great performer.
  • WaMphuthi: “Why are people uncomfortable with how Skolopad dressed when she’s comfortable? It’s her body and her choice, after all.”
