ACTOR Siyabonga Shibe is joining SABC 1 soapie Uzalo.

The actor, who shot to fame as Sifiso in Gaz’lam between 2002 and 2005 will be playing the role of a cop who is the brother of Nkunzi (Masoja Msiza).

The producers introduced Siyabonga to the media at a press conference last month.

He told SunBuzz he finds his role very challenging and interesting.

“Nkunzi is a thug and unapologetic about it. And as a cop, I fight crime but protect my brother. Viewers will be glued to their screens.

“My agent contacted me about this role. I went to auditions just like the other actors. I couldn’t believe it when I received a call saying I had the job.”

He said he’s excited to be working with new talent and with legendary actors.

“It is very interesting to work with energetic actors and actresses on the soapie. Everyone here gets along and supports each other. That makes it easier,” said Siyabonga.

At the press conference, actors revealed how they research their roles.

Nompilo Maphumulo, who plays Nosipho Xulu, explained what she did for her current storyline with Amos, played by former Yizo Yizo actor Ernest Msibi.

“Research is very important for an artist. I had to lock myself up in a house and speak to drug addicts, just to get the feeling of their experiences.”

Khaya Dladla, who plays GC in the soapie, said he had to get to know kasi gays.

“I had to learn their lifestyle, their dress code and how they speak because GC is a gay man from the township who can’t even speak English properly.”
