ORLANDO PIRATES defender, Siyabonga Sangweni’s family is not happy about his postponed wedding.
The 34-year-old star was forced to postpone his wedding, which was scheduled for yesterday, because of his involvement in the Caf Confederation Cup final, which kicks off today at 4pm.
Sangweni was set to tie the knot for the second time with his longtime sweetheart, Nompumelelo “Mpumza” Shembe in Richards Bay, KZN.
Sangweni’s sister, Khokhi, told Sunday Sun Pirates bosses told Sangweni there was no way they could allow him to miss this important game.
“It did not sit well with us when my brother phoned last week to break the news that the wedding had to be postponed. We had everything ready for the wedding, but we have to wait another month now,” said Khokhi.
Another source said the Sangwenis are angry that their culture has been looked down upon as it is well known in the Zulu culture that a wedding can’t be postponed as that could lead to bad luck.
“People’s careers differ. When duty calls, one has to obey. They said they are forced to accept it because his career is of equal importance,” said the source.
Khokhi said even Mpumza was upset.
“But she was calmed down by the fact that her husband-to-be has to honour this crucial match and is going make South Africa proud,” Khokhi added.
Pirates administrative officer, Floyd Mbele, confirmed Sangweni travelled with the team to Tunisia for the game.
“Unfortunately, I can’t comment on his personal issues,” said Mbele.
Nompumelelo and her family refused to comment on the issue.
