TUMI Morake is Mzansi’s top comedian this year!
Ten of South Africa’s funniest people walked away with awards at the Comics’ Choice Awards at Montecasino, Joburg on Saturday night.
The event was produced by John Vlismas and Taffia Keight, and directed by Rob van Vuuren.
It featured the cream of local comedy talent and also entertainers from the rest of the continent, and had the audience laughing from the start.
Tumi finally broke the curse of always being a bridesmaid, never the bride, when she walked off with the Comic of the Year Award.
She said: “This is for all those who said I can’t be a wife, a mother and a comedian at the same time.
“Most importantly, this is for all women.
“It’s about time a woman got recognition for comedy.”
Crowd favourite Skhumba Hlophe received a standing ovation when he was announced the winner of the Flying Solo Award.
Mashabela Galane won the Non-English Award. He was up against Celeste Ntuli and Skhumba in that category.
Kagiso Lediga walked off with the Comics’ Pen Waldo for the second time after winning this category in 2014, while the Goliath and Goliath trio took the Best Friend of Comedy for the second year.
Ebenhaezer Dibakwane received the Newcomer’s Award.
Speaking to the SunTeam, he said: “I’ve only been doing comedy for two years, so it’s good to see that my hard work paid off.”
The award for Intermediate Comic went to Yaaseen Barnes, a former recipient of the Newcomer’s Award.
The Audience Choice Award was given to Summary, and Virgil Prins received the Breakthrough Act Award. Casper de Vries was honoured with a Lifetime Achiever Award.
Comedians representing other countries included Phenyo the Master (Botswana), Mdura (Swaziland), Ndangi Lileka (Namibia), Leonel Mendes (Mozambique), Masapo Mpiti (Swaziland), David Aglah
(Ghana) and Basketmouth (Nigeria).
