THE talented movie director Mr B hopes his award-winning film will enjoy the same success in Mzansi as it has overseas.
He is the man behind the award-winning film Safe Bet which will make it’s local debut on 11 March at Ster Kinekor
nationwide.
The movie premiered last Thursday at Eastgate Mall, Joburg.
Mr B, whose real name is Bonginhlanhla Ncube, said his film has been seen at many international film festivals.
Speaking about the movie, he said: “Safe Bet is an action comedy which will get people laughing. It does not have much
violence and is just meant to be enjoyed. It’s about a young guy called Frank and his quest for money. This is something
we can all relate to, rich or poor, we are always looking to make more of it.”
He said the main character Frank, played by Wandile Molebatsi, is an accountant whose lifelong friend Khaya (Godfrey
Thobejane) tries to get him into a money-making scheme.
The movie also stars Luthuli Dlamini, Jerry Mofokeng, Nandi Nyembe and features surprise guest appearances from the
likes of David Kau and Metro FM’s T-Bo Touch.
The action-packed comedy film won awards at the Global Independent Film Awards, Silicon Valley African Film Festival,
Bronzelens Film Festival, The Film Awards and the Queen City Film Festival.
Safe Bet will have a special screening on 14 April in London as part of an initiative called BIOSKOPE. The initiative gives
filmmakers a platform to show off their films and work in the UK.
“We are so fortunate to have done well overseas and to be invited to show our work to the world. We are honoured and
excited by the invitation,” said Mr B.
Asked if he was involved in the casting of the film, he said: “It was a low budget film, so we couldn’t afford to hire a
casting director and I decided to do it myself. The idea was to take characters that people know and bring them to life in
this film. They are all a great fit for the characters they portray.” Mr B was awarded best producer in 2010 for the
International 48-Hour Film Project’s short film Wrong Call.
