DUE to the high rate of music piracy, KZN artists have decided to appoint a committee which will help them to deal with the crime.
Mpendulo Ngubo the project manager at KZN Music House said they have decided to take a stand. He said they have selected artists from various music genres to serve as their ambassadors in the anti-music piracy campaign.
“We have decided to raise awareness and encourage our communities to be whistleblowers on piracy,” he said.
The ambassadors are maskandi singer Thokozani Langa, gospel sensation Thinah Zungu and Afrotainment record owner DJ Tira.
“Something has to be done. We are being ripped off every day and piracy is making us hungry as artists. We demand that police arrest all the culprits who are selling on the streets,” said DJ Tira. The campaign kicked off it’s provincial tour in Empangeni on Friday and will tour around KZN.
Thinah said: “As artists we are often broke even after our albums sales reach gold. Artists’ lives don’t improve because of piracy.”
Their next stop will be Durban earlier next year. The ambassadors consider Durban as the central point of music piracy.
Mpendulo said they hope the ambassadors will make a difference by working together with communities.
“We are looking forward to fighting and improving the lives of our artists so they do no die broke. We are asking for support from our government, police and communities,” said Mpendulo.
