Critically-acclaimed rapper, Kwesta has opened up about why he quit his footballing career for the stage.

For those of you who don’t know, Kwesta grew up Ekurhuleni, where he was an up-and-coming professional soccer player, even going as far as captaining Jomo Cosmos.

But even then, Kwesta says he knew that he was destined for a life in the spotlight.

So, in 2005, the rapper whose real name is Senzo Mfundo Vilakazi, raised some money and headed to Durban to perform at a few impromptu appearances.

“It was the initial career path I wanted to take and I was actually really good. I wanted to do it only because everyone around me was doing it. But I wasn’t in love with playing soccer. I would come back home and write lyrics and I was more in love with that process than playing soccer. I had to choose one or the other and I chose rap,” Kwesta said in an interview with Zkhiphani.
