Zambian-born actress Abena Ayivor believes in the power of love!
She says this is what the biographical romantic film called A United Kingdom has taught her.
The former Generations star co-starred in the international film with local actors.
It is based on the true story of Botswana’s first president Seretse Khama, who shocked the world when he married a white woman named Ruth Williams from London in the 1940s.
Abena told SunBuzz: “The film taught me a lot about the history of Botswana’s independence. “But the most important thing I took away from the film is that the power of love is amazing.”
Abena plays the role of Tshekedi’s strict wife. Tshekedi is Seretse’s uncle (played by Vusi Kunene).
The international film also features one of Mzansi’s most loved actresses, Terry Pheto, who plays Naledi Khama, Khama’s younger sister.
Abena added that this is the biggest movie she has done in her career.
“Working with Oscar contenders has been absolutely amazing. I made the most of it and I’m grateful for the opportunity.”
Born to a Ghanaian father and Zambian mum, Abena grew up in the Eastern Cape in a large family of eight children.
She is best remembered for her role as Lerato Modise in the popular SABC1 soapie Generations.
The versatile actress has written many shows for e.tv, Mzansi Magic and MTV.
Abena says new challenges stimulate her, and she hopes the movie will open more doors for her on the international scene.
- A United Kingdom will be released in cinemas across the country on Friday.
