On Thursday Radio and TV personality DJ Sbu announced that his energy drink, Mofaya, has officially turned two.

“Today, two years ago, I sold the first can of Mofaya. Today my company turns two,” he says in a clip posted to Instagram.

The presenter adds that he is determined to outlive the three years his business is expected to survive according to stats. “Now according to statistics about black businesses we’re not supposed to be alive. I think, according to statistics, we only have another 12 months, because they say after 3 years we die. We’re here to prove them wrong. We’re here to show you it can be done.”

Admitting that the road has not been an easy one, Sbu says he keeps fighting because he believes.

#HappyBirthdayMoFaya In 2012 two entrepreneurs Sbusiso Leope (Electrical Engineer / Entertainer) & Siphiwe Likhuleni Shongwe (Chemical Engineer/Mining Development Expert) came together to embark on a journey of building the 1st 100% Black owned energy drink brand. With 33 energy drink players at the time in a R3.7Bn industry & no black players, they saw an opportunity. They named their brand MoFaya Energy Drink. Little did they know what they were getting themselves into. A white monopoly capital controlled industry which is untransformed & run by only a few multinationals. They formed a company & called it MoFaya Beverage Company (MBC). Research & development (R&D) would take them almost 2.5 years & they would only sell their 1st can on the 26th Jan 2015. They would go on to ruffle a couple of feathers, getting criticism left right & centre for their unconventional methods of marketing their brand. With no budget they used every means they could to get the MoFaya out there. August 2015 they got a Marketing Campaign Of the Year nomination at the ANN7 South African Of the YEAR Awards. Still struggling to gain presence in major retail outlets they have opted to go for the informal distribution route. Attacking the market by cutting down their prices & empowering younger entrepreneurs, hawkers & small business owners to buy at a low price of R125 per case at Devland Cash & Carry so they can go on to sell & make money for themselves. This past December @mofaya_official achieved a milestone of selling a million cans a month & growing. MBC continues to serve as an inspiration to every entrepreneur out there. With all the struggles & challenges they still face to eventually crack the four-courts, filling stations & major retailers they are not stopping the fight. With very high demand of their product, they believe they will eventually conquer the market & one day become a dominating force in Africa. They have global dreams for their brand & today they celebrate MoFaya's 2nd birthday in the market. #HappyBirthdayMOFAYA #BlackChildItsPossible #BlackManCreate #BlackExcellence #AfricanDream #Africa #AfricaRising #StartUp #Beverages #Business #Entrepreneurship
