“He was the most professional actor I knew. I worked with him on Isibaya and he taught me a lot.”
Poet Mzwakhe Mbuli said: “The country has lost a giant. He was passionate about mentoring young artists. We must continue to celebrate his work.”
Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa said: “We are shocked and saddened by the death of Joe Mafela, a great artist and a generous man. We salute his contribution to South African arts and culture.”
ANC Women’s League secretary general Meokgo Matuba said: “He will be remembered as a leader of transformation who created a platform for black artists to be recognised.”
EFF national spokesman Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said the party sent condolences to Joe’s loved ones.
“We celebrate the legacy of film, music, television and theatre which Joe Mafela shared with his people and the world for over 40 years.”

“He made all of us laugh. We have lost one of the greatest talents in this country.”
