EVERY year many events take place before the prestigious Standard Bank Joy of Jazz.
One that is noteworthy is the Geleza Kleva initiative.
It’s meant to help young musicians understand the business side of music.
The workshops will start in Cosmo City today, move to Ivory Park north next Thursday and end in Eldorado Park on 30 July.
This year, hopeful musicians can learn from award-winning bassist and composer Concord Nkabinde, RJ Benjamin and Kabomo, Judith Sephuma, pianist Thandi Ntuli and Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse. Concord said: “The essence of the workshop is for musicians to understand that music can be a career. It’s not just about performing.
“The workshops are open to anyone who wants to learn from the panel that we’ve invited. I have seen how people change their career paths while pursuing music.
“Some realise that they are better at song-writing and working behind the scenes.”
Concord is one of the organisers of the initiative.
He said they decided on these three townships because they went to Orange Farm, Alexandra and Ekurhuleni last year. Topics will include the role of composer/songwriter and music publishing, performance and the live music scene, concert or event producing and management, and technical production.
) Entrance is free but to attend the workshop, please call T-Music Man on 011 326 0141.
